Payroll giving -
a word from Grŵp Gwalia on how easy it is...
Setting up Payroll Giving with the Swansea Charity Partnership couldn't be easier, a couple of forms to register yourself as an employer and you're away.
The main thing is to let staff know as much as possible about the scheme which was done here at Gwalia by sending out emails and inviting Denise Hughes, Swansea Charities Partnership's Development Manager, to come and talk at a training event. We also advised staff that we could organise a lunchtime 'drop in' hour where people could find the information they wanted at a time to suit them. This kind of thing really does have an impact on staff perceptions on giving to charity and allows people to better understand just how easy it is.
Setting up the deductions for salaries is no more difficult than any other deductions and our payroll department didn't have any problems with this.
The good thing is that you don't have to send lots of different payments each month because all the donations are sent via a third party in one lump sum for them to forward to each of the individual charities (in our case South West Charitable Giving is the third party) . The Welsh Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) currently pay the administrative costs to the third parties so even that won't cost you anything.
At Gwalia, we ensure that new staff are told about the scheme at induction and all information is freely available both on our staff Intranet and as a regular feature in our staff magazine. All in all, it certainly isn't a huge administrative burden to set up and offers staff a quick, easy and efficient way of donating money to those who need it most.
Details
Until March 2009 the Wales Council for Voluntary Action paid the administration fees (usually 4%) for all new companies that set up their Payroll Giving scheme with South West Charitable Giving, one of the largest Payroll Giving Agencies in the UK. This means that all the donations made by your employees will go direct to the charities they support.
All the information for setting up a Payroll Giving scheme is included in the Employers Pack which you can download by clicking here.
