- It costs less to give more
The Payroll Giving scheme was set up by the Government in 1987 to enable anyone to donate to any charity from their gross pay. In 2007 employer Payroll Giving schemes generated almost £100 million for charities in the UK.
The Swansea Charity Partnership is a consortium of local charities approved by HMRC to receive Payroll Giving donations.
Payroll Giving is the most effective way to support our work, providing vital income to enable us to plan ahead for the future. By supporting the Swansea Charity Partnership, each monthly donation will help seven member charities. The income received by the Partnership will be shared equally between each member charity, plus the Don-8 Swansea fund to help other local charities.
Payroll giving -
a word from Grŵp Gwalia on how easy it is...
Setting up Payroll Giving with the Swansea Charity Partnership couldn't be easier, a couple of forms to register yourself as an employer and you're away.
The main thing is to let staff know as much as possible about the scheme which was done here at Gwalia by sending out emails and inviting Denise from the Swansea Charities Partnership to come and talk at a training event. We also advised staff that we could organise a lunchtime 'drop in' hour where people could find the information they wanted at a time to suit them. This kind of thing really does have an impact on staff perceptions on giving to charity and allows people to better understand just how easy it is.
Setting up the deductions for salaries is no more difficult than any other deductions and our payroll department didn't have any problems with this.
The good thing is that you don't have to send lots of different payments each month because all the donations are sent via a third party in one lump sum for them to forward to each of the individual charities (in our case South West Charitable Giving is the third party) . The Welsh Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) currently pay the administrative costs to the third parties so even that won't cost you anything.
At Gwalia, we ensure that new staff are told about the scheme at induction and all information is freely available both on our staff Intranet and as a regular feature in our staff magazine. All in all, it certainly isn't a huge administrative burden to set up and offers staff a quick, easy and efficient way of donating money to those who need it most.
Details
Until March 2009 the Wales Council for Voluntary Action will pay the administration fees (usually 4%) for all new companies that set up their Payroll Giving scheme with South West Charitable Giving, one of the largest Payroll Giving Agencies in the UK. This means that all the donations made by your employees will go direct to the charities they support.

Payroll Giving enables you to make tax effective donations to any charity of your choice because the donation is deducted from gross pay before the calculation of tax. It is very beneficial to the charity because the regular income enables us to plan our services. It also reduces our administration costs because we automatically receive the tax the employee would have paid on their donation.
If your employer has a Payroll Giving scheme, all you have to do is complete a donation choice form which you can obtain either from your payroll office or download the SCP form and give this to your payroll administrator. Donations can be cancelled or amended at any time and the choice of charity can be changed at any time. On average payroll donors support their chosen charity for five years, in many cases much longer. This is why payroll giving has such an enormous impact on the charity’s income.
Donations can be from a minimum of £1 per month per charity.
